In The Women’s Festival, Aristophanes crafts a hilarious and provocative comedy centered on gender conflict, theatrical satire, and religious ritual. The play follows the famous tragedian Euripides, who fears that the women of Athens will punish him at the Thesmophoria, a secret female-only festival honoring Demeter, for his unflattering portrayals of women in his plays. Chaos erupts when Mnesilochus is discovered, leading to a series of farcical escapes, mistaken identities, and witty parodies of Euripides’ own tragedies.
