The Woman of the Saeter

The Woman of the Saeter (1893) completely flips the script on what readers expect from Jerome K. Jerome. There is no lighthearted river boating or bumbling bachelor humor here; this is a genuine, chilling Victorian ghost story.

Set against the rugged, isolated, and unforgiving mountains of Norway, the narrative follows a hunting expedition that takes a dark turn when the characters become lost in a blizzard. They seek refuge in an abandoned saeter (a remote Scandinavian mountainside grazing cabin).Their local guide is instantly seized by a primal terror and flees into the storm, screaming about the legend of the Woman of the Saeter.

What follows is a slow-burn, atmospheric psychological horror story centered on a dark history of twisted love, relationships that turn to pure hatred, and a terrifying, malevolent ghostly vengeance.
