The Wives of the Messenger of Allah (saw)

Eleven women share one title in Islamic history: Mother of the Believers. Each carries her own story of faith, sacrifice, and companionship with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and each shaped the community that formed around him in ways later generations continued to draw upon.

Ustadh Muhammad Swaleh Awadh gathers these eleven lives into a single narrative, moving from Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, the wealthy merchant who first believed in her husband's prophethood, through 'A'ishah bint Abu Bakr, whose knowledge of Hadith and jurisprudence shaped generations of scholarship after her, to Maymunah bint al-Harith, whose marriage closed the circle of the Prophet's household. Between them stand Sawdah, Hafsah, Zaynab bint Khuzaymah, Umm Salamah, Zaynab bint Jahsh, Juwayriyyah, Safiyyah, and Umm Habibah — women drawn from different tribes and different circumstances, brought together within one household.

Each chapter follows a consistent pattern: lineage and family background, the circumstances of marriage to the Prophet, the traits for which each wife was remembered, and an account of her death. Awadh draws on the classical biographical and Hadith literature, presenting extended narrations in the words of the Companions themselves wherever the sources allow — including 'A'ishah's own account of her engagement, and the testimony surrounding the accusation later addressed by Qur'anic revelation.

Translated into English by Ali Carrerage and published by Dar Al-Ghad Al-Jadid, this edition renders the material in accessible, straightforward language suited to readers encountering these accounts for the first time, while retaining the transliterated Arabic names and titles of the original. A glossary of common Islamic honorifics closes the volume for readers less familiar with the terminology.
