The building remembers. So does he.

Ash Holloway films the places his city gave up on: dead mills, shuttered wards, rooms nobody remembers were rooms. He tells himself the work is a kind of vigil, that nothing is really gone as long as somebody is still looking.

Evelyn was in a lot of that footage. Then she drowned in May.

He has worn her watch since the funeral home. The crystal is cracked in the upper left. The hands stopped at 3:42. Some mornings the watch runs warmer than a dead woman's watch has any business running, and Ash has never once asked himself why. He has gotten very good at not asking.

Then the warmth starts pointing.

It walks him to a corner downtown, to a brick wall he has passed two hundred times and never once seen. He walks the frontage and finds nothing. He walks it again. On the third pass there is a door in the wall, copper gone the green-black of copper nobody has polished in a very long time, a dim yellow light behind the leaded glass.

Inside is a warm room. Inside is a woman who listens to him the way nobody has listened since May. Everyone left in his life has been telling him it is time to put Evelyn down.

She is the first person to tell him he doesn't have to.

Ash is not the first person the room has been ready for. The ones who came before him are still in the building.

For readers who like their horror slow, cold, and personal. For anyone who has ever followed an urban explorer into a building they had no business being in. For readers of quiet supernatural horror and psychological ghost stories, the kind where the thing on the other side of the door is patient, and courteous, and knows exactly what you lost.
