Religion og spiritualitet
Three verses, and a claim that they contain everything a person needs for salvation. That is the premise Dr. Israr Ahmad takes up in this short study of Surah al-'Asr, gathering two pieces written seven years apart: an essay first published in the Lahore monthly Meesaq in 1966, and a talk delivered to the staff and senior students of Aitchison College, Lahore, in 1973, later transcribed and printed by the Principal himself.
The argument at the center of both pieces is deceptively simple. Salvation, as Surah al-'Asr states it, rests on four conditions rather than one: faith, righteous action, mutual exhortation to truth, and mutual exhortation to patience. Dr. Israr Ahmad's concern is that most Muslims, in his assessment, have quietly dropped the third and fourth conditions, treating them as optional extras for the exceptionally devout rather than as requirements standing on equal footing with belief itself. Drawing extensively on the tafsir of Maulana Hamid-ud-Din Farahi, he works through the Arabic terms verse by verse — iman, amal-i-saleh, twasi bil-haqq, twasi bis-sabr — showing how each implies and requires the next, so that faith without public witness to truth, and witness without endurance, falls short of what the surah actually asks.
The book places Surah al-'Asr alongside Surah al-Teen and the surahs immediately preceding and following it, al-Takathur and al-Humaza, to draw out a contrast between two paths open to every person: the wide path of material preoccupation and the narrow path of accountability and truth. It closes with reflections on the Prophet Muhammad's own life as the fullest embodiment of the four conditions the surah lays down.
Concise, direct, and drawn from two distinct occasions of address — one written, one spoken — this booklet works equally well as a standalone introduction to one of the Qur'an's shortest chapters or as the first installment in the wider course of Qur'anic studies its author intended to produce.
