The Shame of the Cities

The Shame of the Cities by Lincoln Steffens is a groundbreaking exposé of political corruption in major American cities at the turn of the 20th century. First published in 1904, this collection of investigative reports revolutionized journalism and helped spark the Progressive Era reforms. As one of the earliest and most influential works of muckraking journalism, it captures the grim reality of urban misgovernance—combining fact-based reporting with passionate civic critique. Steffens delves into the corrupt relationships between business interests, political machines, and city officials in places like St. Louis, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York City. Each chapter—originally published in McClure's Magazine—provides an in-depth look at how democratic institutions were manipulated by powerful elites and how ordinary citizens, either through apathy or self-interest, allowed graft and inefficiency to thrive. From "Tweed Days in St. Louis" to "Philadelphia: Corrupt and Contented" and "New York: Good Government to the Test", Steffens exposes the mechanisms of civic decay while holding out hope for reform through informed public action. His work was not a condemnation of democracy, but a call to awaken the democratic spirit among the people. The Shame of the Cities remains a classic in American political literature and journalism. It continues to resonate today for its fearless critique, powerful prose, and enduring relevance to issues of corruption, accountability, and civic engagement.
