The Search Clock A Practical Guide to Lost-Person Search Planning, Field Coordination, Decision-Making, and After-Action Learning

By Julian Marasigan

When someone is overdue, missing, or simply not where they were expected to be, the first problem is rarely a lack of effort. It is a lack of clean information.

People start calling. Maps come out. Weather changes. Someone remembers a detail they forgot to mention twenty minutes earlier. A team returns from an assignment with nothing found, and suddenly everyone has an opinion about what that means.

The Search Clock is a practical guide to thinking clearly inside that kind of uncertainty.

Built for SAR volunteers, students, outdoor leaders, incident-support personnel, and readers who want to understand organized lost-person search, this book focuses on the decisions that happen before, during, and after field assignments. It shows how to separate confirmed facts from assumptions, build search priorities that have reasons behind them, watch the clocks that can change a plan, communicate with families and teams, and learn from empty results instead of treating them as wasted time.

The book begins with a simple orientation map: who is missing, what is known, what is changing, where the likely areas are, and what information would force the plan to change. From there, it develops a compact system for search planning and coordination that can be practiced on paper before it ever has to be used under pressure.

Inside, you will learn how to: - Build a working search claim from evidence rather than from a neat shape on a map. - Separate confirmed information, plausible explanations, and unknowns. - Track multiple operational clocks, including daylight, weather, fatigue, batteries, access, and subject exposure. - Recognize when a search assignment tests a theory rather than proves it. - Record coverage limits so "sector complete" actually means something. - Plan escalation before frustration makes the decision for you. - Use handoffs that transfer objectives, hazards, outstanding questions, and resource status without making the next leader reconstruct the incident from scraps. - Give families and partner agencies clear updates without false reassurance or theatrical certainty. - Design tabletop, dry-run, and live exercises that teach specific skills instead of merely producing tired volunteers. - Diagnose whether a problem sits in the terrain, the coordination system, or the working theory. - Turn after-action lessons into better forms, better training, better briefings, and fewer repeated mistakes.

The approach is deliberately practical. You will find one-page tools, worked examples, short practice drills, common failure modes, and recovery steps throughout the book. The examples are written to make the reasoning visible, not to pretend that every real incident follows the same script.

There is also an important boundary running through the entire book: organized search and rescue is team work performed under real authority, training, and safety procedures. This is not a guide to freelancing a rescue, entering hazardous terrain without qualification, or delaying emergency services while somebody finishes a worksheet. When the situation is real, the local incident system comes first.

What the book does offer is a disciplined way to think within that system.

Because when a search begins, the clock is already moving.

The weather does not wait for the briefing to improve. Fatigue does not ask permission before it changes judgment. A missing person's situation keeps developing while searchers are still arguing about the first map. The advantage comes from making assumptions visible, decisions explainable, and updates fast enough to matter.
