A girl and a sailor with a wooden leg are swallowed by a whirlpool off California and come up in a sea cavern, from which a bird called the Ork flies them out — only to land in Jinxland, whose wicked king the Scarecrow arrives to depose. Baum wrote the ninth Oz book in 1915, drawing on a film his own short-lived studio had made the year before. Trot and Cap'n Bill come over from his other books and stay. Its 78 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
