The Role of Genealogies in the Antiquities of the Jews and the Gospel of Matthew

Most modern Bible readers view genealogies as insignificant. For the Ethiopian church, which highly values family and interconnectedness, biblical genealogies occupy a place of unique importance as they demonstrate God’s redemptive action throughout history.

In this book, Dr. Motuma B. Amante masterfully demonstrates the Ethiopian church’s place in the tapestry of God’s family through the historical-critical comparative analysis of the role of genealogies in the Gospel of Matthew and Joseph Antiquities of the Jews. By undertaking this analysis in relation to their Old Testament roots and distinct theological emphasis, Amante demonstrates how Matthew foregrounds Jesus’s Messianic identity and inclusivity whereas Josephus highlights the connection of Jewish identity to Abraham for a Roman audience. Ultimately, the book illustrates that genealogical narratives go beyond serving as historical records as they are also frameworks for identity construction in the ancient world. All those interested in biblical studies, early Christianity, and Jewish history will find this to be an insightful and interesting read.
