The Rock Springs Massacre: The 1885 Anti-Chinese Riot That Shook Wyoming

On September 2, 1885, a mining quarrel in Rock Springs, Wyoming, burst into something far worse. White coal miners went home for guns, an armed mob closed in on Chinatown from three directions, and by nightfall twenty-eight Chinese residents were dead, their homes in flames, and hundreds were fleeing into the sagebrush. How does a town built to dig coal decide that some of its workers no longer belong among the living?

The Rock Springs Massacre follows that day hour by hour, but it begins long before the first shot. In a railroad town owned by company power and poisoned by racial hatred, Chinese miners and white miners were pushed into a system designed to make rivals of them. Here are the men trapped in the mines, the survivors running across Bitter Creek, Governor Francis E. Warren scrambling for federal troops, and the bitter aftermath in which soldiers restored order, the railroad restored production, and justice never came.

Vivid, deeply researched, and driven by real people rather than abstractions, this is narrative history at its most urgent. It tells not only how the massacre happened, but what America chose to do after blood had been spilled and the ashes cooled. The result is a haunting true story of violence, memory, and impunity that will stay with readers long after the final page.
