The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy

Originally published in 1920, The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy by Lothrop Stoddard is a controversial and deeply racist treatise that reflects the fears and anxieties of early 20th-century white nationalism. The book argues for the preservation of white dominance in the face of what the author perceived as a demographic and political threat from non-white populations across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Structured by region, the book describes "Yellow," "Brown," "Black," and "Red" lands in explicitly hierarchical and prejudicial terms, contrasting them with "White" lands in a narrative rooted in racial determinism. Stoddard warns of an imminent global "racial crisis," fueled by anti-colonial resistance, increasing migration, and growing calls for racial equality. The book became influential in its time among eugenicists and segregationists. It was even reportedly read and referenced by political figures like President Warren G. Harding and Nazi propagandists in Germany. Today, it is widely condemned for promoting scientific racism, eugenics, and imperialist ideologies. Despite its discredited premises, the book remains historically significant as a window into the intellectual underpinnings of racist policies in the early 20th century. Scholars study it not for its validity but to understand how pseudoscience and fear were weaponized to shape public policy, immigration laws, and colonial attitudes. Modern readers should approach this work with critical awareness and historical context.
