The republic of Cicero

The Republic of Cicero (De Re Publica) is one of the most profound and influential philosophical treatises from Ancient Rome, penned by the great orator, statesman, and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero. Inspired by Plato's Republic, Cicero's dialogue presents a Roman vision of an ideal state, deeply rooted in law, justice, and civic duty. Written during a time of political upheaval, Cicero explores the nature of justice, the best form of government, the moral responsibilities of leadership, and the rule of law. Structured as a Socratic dialogue, the work features Scipio Africanus the Younger as its primary speaker and reflects Cicero's belief in the superiority of a mixed constitution—a balanced blend of monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy. Unlike Plato's abstract idealism, Cicero grounds his philosophy in Roman tradition and practicality, emphasizing historical examples and Roman virtues. This edition includes a scholarly Preface, Introduction, and the full Books I–V, which survive either completely or in fragmentary form. It also contains commentary on lost parts, making it an essential resource for students of classical political philosophy, Roman history, law, and republican thought. Rich with timeless insights on governance and civil society, The Republic of Cicero stands as a foundational text in Western political theory and remains remarkably relevant in discussions of constitutional government and moral leadership.
