Religion og spiritualitet

The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States is an antebellum religious treatise, missionary report, and social document that surveys the spiritual condition of enslaved and free Black people in America. Written in a sober, exhortative prose characteristic of nineteenth-century Protestant reform literature, it combines statistical observation, theological argument, and pastoral appeal. Its literary context is the evangelical culture of the Second Great Awakening, yet it is also inseparable from the paternalist assumptions of the slaveholding South. Charles Colcock Jones (1804–1863), a Presbyterian minister from Georgia, was among the most prominent advocates of organized Christian instruction for enslaved people. Born into the plantation society he addressed, Jones believed religious education could discipline, console, and morally reform enslaved communities while leaving slavery itself largely unquestioned. His ministerial work, missionary activity, and involvement with southern ecclesiastical institutions directly shaped the book's purpose and limitations. This volume is recommended not as a neutral guide to religion, but as an important primary text for readers studying American slavery, evangelical reform, race, and southern theology. It offers valuable insight into how Christian benevolence, moral concern, and racial hierarchy could coexist in antebellum thought.
