The Purcell Papers: The Early Irish Tales

Le Fanu's earliest work: Irish tales presented as the papers of a Catholic parish priest, Father Francis Purcell — The Ghost and the Bone-Setter, the doomed last heir of Castle Connor, Schalken the painter and the bride claimed by a dead man, and the secret history of an Irish countess that he would later expand into Uncle Silas. He was known in Dublin as the Invisible Prince for the seclusion of his last years; these tales first appeared anonymously in the Dublin University Magazine from 1838, and the Ireland in them is not picturesque. Fifty-eight plates by painters including Francis Danby and Henry Fuseli, ranging from moonlit gardens and poison trees to Shakespeare's fairies, mirror the uneasy ground where Le Fanu's supernatural tales take root.
