The Premature Baby's First Smile: Understanding Milestones by Corrected Age

A premature baby’s first smile can feel like a tiny sunrise—but knowing when to expect it is not always straightforward. This reassuring, evidence-aware guide explains how corrected age helps parents interpret early facial expressions without turning development into a deadline. You’ll learn the difference between reflex smiles, sleep smiles, and responsive social smiles; how breathing support, medical experiences, vision, temperament, and fatigue can shape early interaction; and which everyday cues show that your baby is connecting before a clear grin appears. With practical ideas for face-to-face play, kangaroo care, feeding-time observation, and gentle milestone tracking, you can nurture communication without pressure or forced positivity. The book also helps you prepare useful questions for a pediatrician or health visitor when concerns persist, while honoring the wide range of healthy development among premature infants. Clear explanations, checklists, and a quick-reference toolkit make it easier to notice progress, celebrate your baby’s individual pace, and build confidence during the transition from NICU care to home life.
