The Phantom Regiment: or, Stories of "Ours"

Officers of a British regiment, known to its own men simply as "Ours", trade stories across the years between Spain, the Caucasus and the Crimea: a month's romance on the Andalusian coast, a guarda costa and a smuggler, a Circassian captain and the hussars of Tenginski, the adventures of a night told three ways, a legend of Fife, and at last the tale of the phantom regiment seen on its midnight march. James Grant wrote more than fifty novels of Scottish soldiering and had served in the army himself; the military detail is precise, and the ghost story is kept for the end. Fifty-eight plates by Sorolla and Goya, from orange groves and fishing returns to masked men on the Andalusian road, carry the Spanish light and disguise that run through these soldiers' tales.
