Historie

Janusz Korczak did not become heroic only at the end.

Before he walked with the children of his orphanage toward Treblinka, he had spent decades proving that children were not property, burdens, or unfinished adults. They were people — with dignity, voices, rights, mistakes, fears, and moral authority of their own.

Born Henryk Goldszmit in Warsaw, Korczak became a pediatrician, writer, broadcaster, educator, and one of the great early defenders of children’s rights. At Dom Sierot, the Jewish orphanage he helped build and direct, children were not simply cared for. They governed, judged disputes, published their own words, shared responsibilities, and practiced citizenship inside a child-sized republic.

Then the Nazi occupation of Poland forced the orphanage into the Warsaw Ghetto.

There, under starvation, disease, terror, and deportation, Korczak and his closest collaborator, Stefania Wilczyńska, struggled to preserve order, cleanliness, education, tenderness, and dignity. Friends offered Korczak chances to escape. He refused to leave the children.

The Orphanage at the End of the World tells the devastating story behind one of the most famous acts of moral courage in Holocaust history. But it does not reduce Korczak to his final march. It restores him as a doctor, thinker, writer, teacher, and builder of a radical educational world that trusted children more deeply than most adults ever had.

This is not only the story of a man who died with children.

It is the story of a man who spent his life asking what the world would become if adults finally respected them.
