The Observations of Henry

The Observations of Henry (1901) is a brilliant, uniquely framed addition to Jerome K. Jerome's comedic library. It is a textbook example of "upstairs, downstairs" observational humor, utilizing one of the absolute best perspectives for social satire: the humble, overlooked hotel waiter.

Structured as a collection of episodic short stories told through the voice of Henry (or "Henri," as he likes to style himself), a career waiter working across various London coffee shops, hotels, and restaurants. Because patrons assume a waiter is a "blind owl" who notices nothing, they drop their guards entirely. Henry watches it all, recounting the awkward romantic dramas, the ridiculous financial schemes of the self-important, and the eccentric habits of both high society and gritty street characters like "Kipper" and "Carrots".

A masterful, witty look at human behavior from a fly-on-the-wall perspective that is still much loved by modern audiences today.
