Historie

Hubert Howe Bancroft's *The Native Races* (Vols. 1–5) is an ambitious, encyclopedic survey of the Indigenous peoples of western North America, encompassing their origins, languages, traditions, social institutions, religions, antiquities, and encounters with European powers. Compiled from chronicles, missionary reports, ethnographic observations, and oral or documentary testimony, the work moves between descriptive ethnology, historical synthesis, and speculative anthropology. Its vast comparative scope and nineteenth-century prose reflect the era's fascination with classification and "civilization," while also revealing the racial hierarchies and evolutionary assumptions that shaped Victorian scholarship. Read today, the set is therefore both a substantial repository of early knowledge and a significant document in the history of colonial intellectual culture. Bancroft (1832–1918), a bookseller, publisher, collector, and self-fashioned historian, assembled an extensive library of western American materials and sponsored a team of researchers whose work informed this series. His commercial and intellectual investment in the history of the Pacific slope encouraged him to preserve sources that might otherwise have remained scattered, even as his dependence on assistants and uneven documentation complicates questions of authorship and authority. The project reflects his determination to produce a comprehensive regional history before Indigenous cultures and memories were further disrupted by settler expansion. Recommended for readers of Indigenous studies, American history, anthropology, historiography, and colonial studies, *The Native Races* rewards careful, critical reading. It should neither be treated as a neutral ethnographic record nor dismissed as mere antiquarianism: its accumulated evidence, methodological contradictions, and colonial assumptions illuminate how knowledge about Native peoples was collected, organized, and legitimized. Scholars will find it especially valuable when read alongside contemporary Indigenous scholarship and modern critiques of nineteenth-century anthropology.
