Irena Sendler did not only help children escape the Warsaw Ghetto. She fought to preserve who they were.

In German-occupied Warsaw, Jewish children faced starvation, deportation, and death behind the ghetto walls. As a Polish social worker with access to welfare records, sanitary inspections, forged documents, and underground contacts, Irena Sendler became part of a dangerous rescue network that moved children out of the ghetto and into hiding.

But escape was only the beginning.

A rescued child needed a false name, a new story, a hiding place, food, papers, prayers, and adults willing to risk execution. Many children survived by pretending to be someone else. Sendler understood the terrible cost of that survival. With her co-workers, she recorded children’s real names, false identities, family details, and hiding places, then buried the lists in jars so that one day, if the war ended, the children might recover the truth of who they had been.

The Names in the Jars tells the story of Irena Sendler not as a lone savior, but as a courageous organizer inside a larger network of women, social workers, families, convents, couriers, doctors, clerks, and members of Żegota, the Council to Aid Jews. It follows the parents who made impossible choices, the children who crossed into danger under new identities, and the fragile records that carried memory through catastrophe.

This is a biography of rescue, but also of identity. It is a story about false papers and real names, hidden children and buried archives, moral courage and historical memory. Above all, it is about one woman’s refusal to let genocide erase not only lives, but names.
