The Murder of the Whitechapel Mistress: Victorian London's Sensational Murder Mystery

A true crime account of the Whitechapel murder, criminal investigation and trial that shocked Victorian London society. Respected businessman Henry Wainwright had everything a 19th century English gentleman could wish for: A wife and five children and a London townhouse. But in 1872, Henry fell in love with Harriet Lane, embarking on a risky affair. Set up by Henry with an allowance and lodgings, Harriet gave birth to two children as they pretended to be husband and wife. But when Henry's finances tumbled out of control and bankruptcy loomed, what happened next was a scandalous conspiracy ending in murder. This true story will transport readers to the world of London's East End society where, fourteen years before the infamous Jack the Ripper Murders, the 'Whitechapel Mystery' was the most sensational criminal case of the era. With details about the main players in the murder, the police investigation and Old Bailey trial, The Murder of the Whitechapel Mistress is a rollickingly good Victorian scandal.
