A copying clerk in Petersburg spends everything he has on a new overcoat, and for one evening he is a person. The tale that Russian writers said they all came out from is here with a nose that leaves its owner and takes a better job, a clerk's diary that slides into madness, and two Ukrainian tales of the uncanny. Gogol burned his own sequel and starved himself to death at forty-two.
