Published in 1930, *The Falcon of Malta* is the masterpiece of American author Dashiel Hammett and is widely recognized as a pinnacle of the "hard-boiled" detective novel genre in world literature. This work not only created the classic private detective character—Sam Spade—but also fundamentally changed the face of the detective novel.

Plot Summary: The story unfolds in San Francisco. A mysterious woman hires Spade and his partner to find her missing sister, but the partner is shot dead that very night. As the investigation deepens, Spade is drawn into a frenzied heist of the "Falcon of Malta." This legendary, jewel-encrusted golden eagle statue attracts a group of villains with ulterior motives: the insidious Gutmann, the cunning Cairo, and the seemingly innocent but dangerous "femme fatale" Bridged. In this vortex of power and greed, Spade... Spade walks the gray area between law and crime, attempting to uncover the truth while trying to survive.

Key characteristics:

Hard-blooded style: Unlike Sherlock Holmes' elegant deduction, Spade is cold, pragmatic, and resilient. He not only deals with criminals but also battles corrupt police officers.

Human greed: The shocking twist at the end of the novel (the truth about the golden eagle) profoundly satirizes humanity's endless desires and illusions.

Objective narration: Hammett employs an extremely objective narrative style, describing only the characters' actions and dialogue, never dissecting their inner thoughts, leaving ample room for interpretation for the reader.

This work was adapted into a film of the same name in 1941, starring Humphrey Bogart, and is considered the seminal work of film noir.
