The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: Ride of the Headless Horseman

Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a timeless American tale of mystery, superstition, and darkly comic adventure. In the quiet village of Sleepy Hollow, where ghost stories and strange legends are deeply rooted in local folklore, Ichabod Crane arrives as a nervous and ambitious schoolmaster. Tall, superstitious, and easily frightened, Ichabod becomes captivated by the beautiful Katrina Van Tassel and dreams of winning her hand—and the comfortable life that might come with it.

But the village is haunted by a terrifying legend: the Headless Horseman, a spectral rider said to roam the countryside at night in search of his missing head. After an evening of food, dancing, and ghost stories, Ichabod begins his lonely journey home through the dark woods, where the boundary between folklore and reality becomes increasingly uncertain.

Blending suspense, humor, romance, and supernatural folklore, Irving’s classic story remains one of the most famous works of early American literature.
