The Iliad

Homer is traditionally regarded as the ancient Greek poet who composed *The Iliad* and *The Odyssey*, two foundational works of Western literature. Although his exact identity remains shrouded in mystery, he is believed to have lived around the 8th century BCE, possibly in Ionia, a region on the western coast of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). Ancient tradition describes Homer as a blind bard who traveled, reciting epic poetry. However, no definitive historical records confirm his existence, and some scholars argue that "Homer" may represent a collective tradition of oral poets rather than a single individual. Despite this uncertainty, the brilliance and unity of style in the epic poems strongly suggest a master poet. *The Iliad* focuses on a brief episode of the Trojan War, highlighting themes of honor and wrath, while *The Odyssey* narrates the long, perilous journey of Odysseus returning home after the war. These poems were originally part of an oral tradition and were later written down, profoundly influencing Greek culture and education.
