The Horla: An Invisible Horror in Modern English

A quiet life by the Seine begins to unravel when a man becomes convinced that an invisible presence has entered his world. At first, the changes are small: sleepless nights, strange sensations, unexplained exhaustion, and an increasing certainty that he is no longer alone. Then objects begin to move without explanation, and the possibility of an unseen being becomes impossible for him to ignore. As his obsession grows, he tries to determine whether the Horla is a supernatural entity, an unknown force, or a terrifying product of his own mind. Guy de Maupassant's The Horla is a landmark of psychological and supernatural horror, told through the intimate form of a man's private journal. Its ambiguity is central to its terror: the listener is never allowed a comfortable answer about where reality ends and madness begins. This Modern English Edition presents Maupassant's story in clear, natural contemporary language while preserving its central narrative, atmosphere, and psychological tension. The audiobook also includes an original companion, providing additional context and analysis for listeners who want to explore the story beyond the main narrative. Narrated by Luke Meinier Dalofin, this edition offers a contemporary way to experience one of the most unsettling works of nineteenth-century supernatural fiction.
