Historie

How did India become the country that produced one of the earliest advanced civilisations with the Indus civilisation, experienced a magnificent epoch under the Mughal Empire, was exploited under British colonial rule and today helps shape world politics as a voice of the developing countries? This audiobook shows why India is one of the most fascinating countries of the present day.

Bert Alexander Petzold takes listeners on a journey through the history of India. Anyone wishing to understand this country's political, religious, cultural and economic development will find here access to a world of diversity and historical depth.

As early as around 2500 BC, the Indus civilisation emerged as one of humanity's earliest advanced civilisations. Carefully planned cities, trade, craftsmanship and urban order testify to an astonishing power of development. When Indo-Aryan tribes migrated from Central Asia around 1500 BC, the Vedic Age began, giving rise to religious traditions, social structures and the caste system.

In the sixth century BC, Buddhism and Jainism emerged as significant reform movements whose influence extended far beyond India. Under Emperor Ashoka, the Maurya Empire united large parts of the subcontinent. Later, under the Gupta dynasty, India experienced a golden age in which art, science, mathematics and trade reached a remarkable height.

From the twelfth century onwards, Islam spread across the subcontinent, and with the Delhi Sultanate a new phase of state formation began. In the sixteenth century, the powerful Mughal Empire arose, reaching a cultural high point of world-historical significance under rulers such as Akbar and Shah Jahan. Buildings such as the "Taj Mahal" became symbols of an era in which power, art and architecture merged.

In the eighteenth century, British colonialism became ever more deeply entrenched and led in 1858 to direct control by the British Crown. From economic exploitation, political oppression and growing resistance emerged an impressive freedom movement. Under Mahatma Gandhi, the non-violent struggle for independence gained world-historical significance. With the partition into India and Pakistan in 1947, a new chapter began, whose effects continue to be felt today in the conflict over Kashmir.

After the Second World War, Jawaharlal Nehru shaped the independent state into a democratic republic. India remained a key political power under Indira Gandhi as well. Since the 1990s, the reforms under P. V. Narasimha Rao have accelerated economic growth, technological modernisation and the country's rise as a high-tech location. Today, India is the world's largest democracy, a spacefaring nation, a leading exporter of IT services, a major producer of food and textiles and an important voice among the emerging developing countries.

Bert Alexander Petzold combines historical precision with vivid presentation. The audiobook places turning points in context, explains connections and shows how early advanced civilisations, religious reform movements, great empires, colonial foreign rule, the struggle for freedom and a democratic new beginning gave rise to a state of global weight. It is ideally suited to preparation for examinations leading to a higher education entrance qualification and for study at university.

Anyone wishing to understand India not merely as a distant great power, but in its historical depth, will discover in this audiobook a country of advanced civilisations, religions, empires, struggles for freedom and visions of the future. Discover India as the origin of great intellectual traditions, as a stage for profound upheavals and as a dynamic force of the present. Secure this audiobook and experience how India connects past and present.
