A boy grows up in a New Hampshire valley beneath a cliff whose crags form a vast human face, and waits for the great man the prophecy says will one day resemble it. Hawthorne's White Mountain tales gather the New England he could not leave alone — the Great Carbuncle, the Ambitious Guest and the family that dies in a landslide. The face itself collapsed in 2003. Fifty-six plates by Thomas Cole and Asher Brown Durand trace the American wilderness from first harvest to old age, matching Hawthorne's own passage through the White Mountain landscape.
