Complete and unabridged, with 53 full-page plates by Francisco Goya, Canaletto and William Hogarth. The daughter of Huguenot refugees, married to a foolish London brewer, is left destitute with five children, gives them away, and rises through a series of protectors to a fortune, a title and a maid who knows everything. Defoe published "Roxana" in 1724 and left the ending deliberately unresolved, which readers have argued about ever since. The bookkeeping is exact, the repentance is late, and the question of what became of the daughter is never answered. Fifty-three plates by painters including Hogarth and Daumier follow a world of gaming houses, politicians, thieves and absinthe drinkers that mirrors Roxana's own precarious rise and fall.
