The Distance of a Lonely Man

A dead man wanted to disappear. The mesa had other plans.

Lyle Summers stands six-foot-three, all wire and discipline, his twelve years with KSP etched into every measured movement. Each dawn begins the same: iron notches checked, acrid piñon coffee poured, volcanic dust brushed from worn boots. He doesn't search for peace. He practices disappearance.

Then the City arrives.

Survey stakes scar the basalt. Digital maps overwrite forgotten trails. The chemical stench of neon-orange paint stains ancient stone while Samuel Dá's 1 Earth development team invokes a forgotten 1924 Reverter Clause. In twenty-two days, the mesa—and everything buried beneath it—will legally belong to them.

But the land refuses to surrender.

A bruised-blue glow seeps through fractured rock. An infrasound hum vibrates beneath the silence. As evidence points toward a sophisticated theft of neodymium and dysprosium hidden beneath the mesa, attorney Sofia Reyes finds herself caught between City Law and something far older that has never recognized human ownership.

Now every secret carries a cost.

To save the mesa, Lyle must abandon the ghost he spent years becoming. To seal its secrets forever, the Dead Man must decide what part of himself can never return.
