Historie

In the summer of 1518 a woman stepped into the streets of Strasbourg and began to dance. She was not celebrating. She was not performing. She could not stop. Soon others joined her and the city found itself facing one of the strangest crises in European history, a dancing epidemic that turned fear, faith, illness, hunger, and public panic into motion.

The Dancing Plague reconstructs Strasbourg’s terrifying outbreak with cinematic detail and historical care. Jasper Wilson moves beyond internet folklore and sensational death counts to explore the world that made the epidemic possible, a stressed early modern city shaped by famine pressure, disease anxiety, religious belief, civic authority, and the fear of St. Vitus. The book follows the dancers, doctors, officials, musicians, clergy, and witnesses as Strasbourg tried to explain suffering with the tools it had.

At the center of the story is the city’s most disturbing mistake. Officials reportedly tried to cure the dancers by giving them space and music, hoping they could dance the sickness out. When that failed, the crisis shifted from medicine to religion, from public management to pilgrimage and ritual. What began as one body in motion became a citywide mystery about belief, stress, authority, and the ways human fear can become physical.

Eerie, suspenseful, and psychologically rich, The Dancing Plague is not a joke about people dancing themselves to death. It is a serious account of a city under pressure, a culture searching for meaning, and bodies that made invisible terror impossible to ignore.
