The Count of Monte Cristo: Volume I

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. Edmond Dantès is nineteen, about to be made captain of his own ship, and days from marrying the woman he loves, when three men who each have something to gain from his ruin — a rival for his fiancée, a jealous shipmate, and an ambitious prosecutor protecting his own father's secret — conspire to have him denounced as a Bonapartist agent. He is arrested at his own engagement dinner and, without trial, without even being told the charge, buried in the island fortress of the Château d'If.

In the dark, for years, Dantès has only the sound of another prisoner tunneling through the wall of his cell — the Abbé Faria, a brilliant, half-mad old man who becomes the father, teacher, and co-conspirator Dantès never had, and who possesses one piece of knowledge that could change everything: the location of a vast hidden fortune on the island of Monte Cristo. What Faria gives Dantès in that cell is not just a treasure map but an education, turning a trusting young sailor into a man capable of orchestrating a reckoning that will take him the rest of the book, and several more volumes, to complete.

First published in installments beginning in 1844, The Count of Monte Cristo is Dumas at his most purely enthralling — a prison break, a treasure hunt, and the opening moves of the greatest revenge plot in French fiction, all in one volume. This new translation keeps the momentum that made it impossible to put down in serial form and still is.
