In The City, influential urban thinker Lewis Mumford examines the growth of American cities and the social values embedded in their streets, buildings, industries, and neighborhoods.

Mumford argues that every period of American history leaves its physical mark on the urban landscape. Older provincial communities reflect one form of social life, while the rapidly expanding commercial and industrial city reveals another—driven increasingly by speculation, machinery, finance, and relentless growth.

Among his sharpest criticisms is the American gridiron street plan. Designed largely for convenient subdivision and real-estate development, the rigid grid sacrifices geography, beauty, community, and human needs to economic efficiency.

Yet Mumford’s concern reaches far beyond architecture. He sees the modern metropolis becoming a new kind of wilderness: crowded yet isolating, mechanically efficient yet socially fragmented. For cities to become truly civilized, he argues, planning must serve human life rather than commerce alone.

Originally published in the influential 1922 anthology Civilization in the United States, The City offers an early and remarkably prescient critique of urban sprawl, speculative development, industrial growth, and the challenge of building cities for people.
