The Child Protective Services Caseworker's Shield
Most books in this category ask you to change everything at once.
This one asks for one skill.
Not ten. Not a page of acronyms you'll remember only during training. One DBT skill, practiced repeatedly, in an overloaded month — because a caseworker who tries to install ten new habits during an overloaded month has simply created another source of failure.
That principle runs through the whole book, and it shapes how the book is meant to be read.
Two speeds.
Parts I and II are a working manual. Read them that way. Mark the situations that resemble your own week. Take one skill and use it until it's yours.
Part III moves slower, and deliberately. Those are the EMDR chapters, and they exist to give you treatment literacy — the terminology, what a competent treatment process generally includes, and the questions worth bringing to a clinician.
They are not instructions. Valeska Hoffmann is direct about this: desensitization, bilateral stimulation, interweaves, installation, and body scan are described so you can recognize them, not perform them on yourself. If a memory carries enough weight that you want to process it, that weight is precisely the reason to bring it to a qualified trauma therapist.
Part IV is a systems check, and it is the part most books like this leave out entirely.
Because individual regulation matters — and so do supervision, workload, safety, organizational culture, medical care, relationships, and career design. When the same problem keeps returning, the useful question is not what's wrong with me. It's which layer owns this.
Sometimes the answer is you. Often it isn't.
Inside
Scenes you'll recognize, steps you can try today, and language that does not insult the problem.
Part I — The Unseen Wounds: Understanding the Caseworker's World How this shows up at work, and what to change in the next meeting rather than in theory.
Chapter 1. The Unique Calling of CPS — the role and its responsibilities.
Chapter 2. Beyond Burnout: vicarious trauma and secondary traumatic stress. Defining vicarious trauma, with language and steps for a pain that advice-column cheerfulness cannot reach.
