Cillian Byrne photographed a building on Imlay Street on a Thursday afternoon. Ninety minutes, exterior shots, beautiful 1930s brickwork. He didn't know what was inside it. He does now, or enough of it to understand why two men in good coats are waiting for him on a quiet Red Hook street on a Tuesday night.
He doesn't run. He's his father's son — he reads the geometry of situations before they complete themselves, and this one is Italian, disciplined, and making no attempt to be violent when visibility is available. They want to talk. Somewhere north, somewhere with grounds, somewhere far enough from the city that a conversation can take as long as it needs to.
The estate is old money and functioning security and a room that is not a cell, which tells him something about whoever he's about to meet. The lock is on the outside and the window is two floors up and he doesn't try either of them, because running before he understands what he's worth to the man at the top of this is still the wrong calculation.
The Capo who summons him in the morning is not what he expected. He is younger than the estate implies, and controlled in a way that doesn't read as cold. He is the kind of man who decides something and then arranges the world around the decision rather than the other way around. He looks at Cillian across the study with the flat attention of someone who has already done the preliminary assessment and is now doing something more specific.
Cillian has a photography project, a Wicker Park studio, and no desire to be anyone's leverage. What he has not counted on is a capo who turns out to be something other than the threat he came with — and a situation that stops being about what Cillian accidentally photographed and starts being about something considerably harder to walk away from.
Steamy, tense, and built around two men who come in as adversaries and discover the distance between adversaries and something else is shorter than either planned for. If possessive alpha MM mafia romance with real chemistry and a captive who refuses to perform helplessness is your read, this is it. Get it now.
