Historie
The first sign was almost always a face. A peat cutter, working a bank he had worked countless times before, drove his spade into the dark earth and found himself looking at a cheek, a closed eye, or the stubble on a jaw. The skin was brown and the features strangely calm, and what was uncovered was a mummified person in the peat who looked less like an ancient corpse than someone who had fallen asleep an hour before. More often than not, the cutters did the sensible thing, setting down tools and alerting the authorities.
For generations, this was how the bog bodies of northern Europe returned to the world. They were not uncovered by archaeologists with brushes and trowels but found by accident, whether by men cutting fuel and finding a limb or a head. The remains looked recent enough to begin as murder cases, so police came out to the moss, coroners opened files, and in more than one instance the dead were checked against the names of people who had lately vanished from a nearby town. However, the ground told a different story, because the body lay beneath layers of peat that had taken centuries to form, and when radiocarbon testing came into use, it gave firmer answers. The corpse who looked fresh enough for a police file had sometimes lain beneath the moss for 2,000 years.
Bog bodies have surfaced for as long as people have cut peat, and they remain among the strangest human remains on the planet. They have come out of the wetlands of Denmark, northern Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Britain, and southern Scandinavia, preserved by a chemistry that performs a strange reversal. Skin, hair, fingernails, clothes, and the contents of the stomach can remain immediately recognizable long after the bones beneath them had dissolved, and this preservation has made the bog people some of the most intimate survivors of the ancient world, as well as some of the most difficult to explain.
