The Black Stain on the Shukalsky's Right Eye

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. Twenty years have passed since the catastrophe; because of algae the snow falls pink, in places blood-red. Nearing seventy, Detective Şukalski has postponed his retirement by ten years and hides the congenital black spot covering a quarter of his right eye behind jam-jar glasses. On the eighth floor of his twenty-storey block he makes sculptures he shows no one, and on the snail-spiral staircase he loses track of which floor he is on.

It all begins with a wounded stork standing motionless on the roof opposite: ants invade his flat, stork carcasses whose blood never dries appear on the roof, a human ear turns up in the garden bushes. Then retired colonel Swankmajer is found dead outside his own door, in the building's immigrant milkman's truck. As the investigation stretches from a former student who now heads the Albanian mafia to a beauty queen burned to death and a severed head standing in the middle of a frozen red lake, the neighbours he has not met on the stairs for years enter the interrogation room one by one.

Şukalski limps with a black substance stuck to his shoe, a material not produced since the catastrophe; he wakes up in places a silent taxi driver takes him without asking the address. And at home, the sculpture of his own right eye has begun to seep a black, sticky liquid.

Yiğit Kahraman's second crime novel, after Helena Anentome.
