The Banner’s Call: Honor, Truth, and the Courage to Raise the Right Banner

In the land of Saint-Pierre—where banners rise above stone keeps and villagers toil beneath heavy dues—Etienne, a 17-year-old squire, is taught that loyalty is the highest virtue. His world is built on obedience, duty, and the stern authority of Lord Bertrand, whose blue banner symbolizes order above all.

But beyond the castle walls, hardship grows. Taxes rise unfairly, grain disappears, and families begin to starve. Marie of the Mill, a calm and insightful leader among the villagers, speaks for the people with steady conviction. Images from pages 12–14 show her standing before her community with dignity and resolve.

Her pleas for justice open Etienne’s eyes. Torn between the loyalty he was raised to protect and the suffering he now sees, he begins questioning the very order he once trusted.

When Etienne discovers evidence of corruption within the steward’s ledgers—including unjust fines, misdirected grain, and secret dealings—he faces a life-altering choice. Does he remain silent to preserve his position, or stand beside the villagers to uncover the truth?

In a powerful turning point depicted on pages 96–102, Etienne carries his lord’s own banner into the bailli’s tribunal—not in rebellion, but in honor of what the banner should represent: fairness, protection, and rightful law.
