The Antifa Comic Book: 100 Years of Fascism and Antifa Movements

The first graphic nonfiction book by Indigenous (from the Kwakwaka'wakw nation, prounounced kwo-kwuh-kow-wahk) artist Gord Hill in six years. His first, The 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book (2010), which documents 500 years of indigenous resistance in North America, remains one of our most consistent backlist sellers, having sold more than 20,000 copies.
In addition to his artistic work, Gord is a dedicated political activist well versed in progressive, Indigenous, anti-colonial issues. His second book, The Anti-Capitalist Resistance Comic Book (which has sold more than 12,000 copies), detailed his work in anti-globalization movements since the 1990s (the result of which has meant that he is banned from traveling to the US). His activities included the 1992 protests in San Francisco against the 500-year celebration of Columbus’ “discovery” of the Americas, the 1992 anti-World Trade Organization (WTO) protests in Seattle, and the 2010 anti-G20 protests in Toronto.
His new book – the first in full color – relates thematically to the first two: a detailed history of fascism over the last 100 years, and the various anti-fascist movements that were organized in response. Beginning with the first instance of fascism in World War I Italy (Mussolini organized the first Italian fascist party in 1915), the book moves through World War II-era Germany and its allies, Spain during the civil war, the KKK in America, and today’s chilling resurgence of fascism in the new era of 45 – and the organized responses that sought (or seek) to combat it.
Antifa movements have returned to the spotlight in the wake of 2017’s shocking resurgence of the KKK in Charlottesville, an event which culminated in the death of an anti-KKK demonstrator. Since then, Antifa movements have received their own share of criticism for arguably engaging in the same tactics as their adversaries, but for most people engaged in social justice issues, Antifa protests are perceived as one of their only hopes in combating the evils of alt-right insanity.
Blurb pitches to Mark Bray (author of The Antifa Handbook) and graphic novelist Joe Sacco (author of Palestine and Footnotes in Gaza).
