Pete Whittaker exploits elderly sisters Elizabeth Toner and Bella Branwell after their Alzheimer’s diagnoses, isolating them, draining finances, and attempting marriage to seize Bella’s estate. Family members David and his daughter Izzy fight through Social Services, police, and courts, eventually securing Power of Attorney and a deputyship, ousting Pete. Both women decline and die in care during COVID-19. The novel exposes predatory marriage loopholes and highlights the need for legal reform protecting dementia sufferers.

Following the successful publication of his earlier novels, The Ghost Dance Fault and Do Not Bury Me in Bolton, Eugene Ferguson draws on his extensive television production experience — including directing Coronation Street — for his current work: a sequel to his debut novel, The Ghost Dance Fault.
