Vol. 6: San Zang and his disciples have only just escaped danger when they arrive at the temple of Zhen Yuan, the most distinguished Taoist in the world and the owner of the magical RenShen tree. When Wu Kong and Bajie discover the secret of the RenShen's precious fruits, the travelers must once again face the consequences of the pig's appetite and the monkey's temper. Three disciples eat fruits of the RenShen tree and they are accused heavily by the tree owner's disciples. Infuriated by their insults, Wu Kong destroys the RenShen tree. When Zhen Yuan returns from his teachings, he finds what happened to the tree. Zhen Yuan tracks down the four travelers and demands answer. Wu Kong tries to attack the monk, but he and his companions are swept into Zhen Yuan's magical sleeve, and he returns with them to the temple, where they are charged and sentenced to being whipped.

Vol. 7: After Sun Wu Kong's temper resulted in the destruction of the sacred RenShen tree and cost San Zang precious time and energy, the priest has very little patience with his eldest disciple. That patience will be sorely tested when the White Bone Goblin repeatedly tries to make a meal of San Zang, and Wu Kong responds with characteristic aggression. When San Zang banishes Wu Kong, the remaining travelers face unprecedented obstacles; the journey is getting more dangerous the farther they travel, and they may not be able to survive without the help of San Zang's most powerful companion. Despite the proof of the Goblin's bones on the ground, San Zang refuses to believe the monkey was defending his master from a goblin and expels Sun Wu Kong from the group.

Vol. 8: San Zang and his three disciples have just overcome the greatest threat to their journey so far: their fidelity to one another. Now they must confront and overcome two of the most poweful monsters they have encountered, a pair of brothers who rule with the help of five enchanted weapons. They are the Golden Horned King and his younger brother, Silver Horned King. They have heard that eating SanZang's flesh will grant eternal life, so the Silver Horned King gathers his troops to patrol the mountain range and look for the priest. Their power is strong enough that Sun Wu Kong must be clever as well as powerful. Otherwise, his friends will be the main course on the dinner menu. San Zang and Wu Jing are brought to the lair of the two kings, who decide to throw an elaborate feast in which the priest will be the main course.

Vol. 9: San Zang and his disciples journey to the West under constant threat of attack from monsters and demons, as well as a seemingly endless string of tests invented for them by the very deities who set them on their adventure. Amid the hardship, it is easy to forget the many ways in which the four friends have helped numerous people along the way. Now, a vengeful ghost comes forth to ask the priest and his traveling companions for their help in righting a terrible injustice that cost him his life and his kingdom three years earlier.

Vol. 10: Having barely survived their most recent and difficult test, San Zang and his disciples must now pass through the treacherous Fire Cloud Kingdom, where an infant king with tremendous power aims to become the first monster to taste San Zang's flesh. Not long after the flame appears in the sky, San Zang hears a young child's cry for help. Sun Wu Kong is suspecious of the unfolding events, but even though the Stone Monkey has saved San Zang from monsters in disguise on numeruos prior occasions, the priest reprimands his disciple's suspecion and rescues the seemingly innocent child. Sun Wu Kong tries to eliminate the threat by throwing the monster off a cliff, but the child suddenly transforms into a cloud of flames and kidnaps San Zang.
