Vol. 2: Sun Wu Kong, having declared himself "Emperor of Heaven," continues his antagonistic campaign against the Jade Emperor and his allies until the gods surrender and offer the Handsome Monkey King the official title of "Emperor of Heaven." But Sun Wu Kong cannot help but cause trouble throughout the heavens. When the monkey's antics anger the Jade Emperor for a second time, a new military campaign is launched against the monkeys, which culminates in Sun Wu Kong facing the one being who might bring his mischief to an end: Buddha himself. While the Buddha holds Sun Wu Kong in the palm of his hand, he makes a wager that the monkey will not be able to escape. When Sun Wu Kong tries to escape, Buddha slams him into the earth, and creates a mountain with his five fingers to trap the monkey for five hundred years.

Vol. 3: Sun Wu Kong, punished by Buddha centuries before, has spent five hundred years buried under Five-Finger Mountain when he encounters San Zang, a priest headed west in search of Buddhist scriptures. On the Goddess of Mercy's instructions, Wu Kong frees himself and assists the priest on a journey to the West that will be fraught with peril. The two come to a treacherous mountain pass. While crossing a mountain lake they are set upon by a water dragon that eats their horse before Sun Wu Kong narrowly saves his master and flies them to safety. The Goddess of Mercy appears to inform the duo that the dragon is a sea prince who was sentenced to death for causing trouble in heaven but spared by the Goddess, much like Sun Wu Kong. The Goddess tells them that their journey will require more than an ordinary horse and she transforms the dragon into a horse to accompany them.

Vol. 4: From the moment they crossed the western border of the Tang Dynasty, San Zang and Sun Wu Kong have been in danger. When not struggling to keep the monkey from causing trouble or angering the gods, the priest must worry about threats from both monsters and people. But the two journeymen have found fortune and the occasional friend along the way, and now another unlikely companion is set to join them on their journey to the West. The two travelers come upon a village whose ruler asks for their help in defeating a pig monster who has kidnapped his youngest daughter. Sun Wu Kong lures the pig monster into a long fight. Sun Wu Kong finally gains the upper hand and is about to kill his opponent when the pig monster reveals that the Goddess of Mercy has recently approached him about becoming San Zang's second companion for his journey to the West. San Zang gives the pig monster the Buddhist name Zhu Bajie, and he joins the two travelers on their journey.

Vol. 5: Chosen by a goddess and an emperor, and hunted by almost everyone else, Sun Wu Kong, San Zang, and their new companion, Zhu Bajie, have overcome numerous obstacles on their journey to the West, from monster kings to mountain bandits to sea dragons. Now, the three companions face three very different trials that will test their fidelity, their compassion, and their individual impulses. Failure will doom the journey; success will make them stronger, and give them one final, invaluable companion. The travelers continue west until they come upon an impossibly wide and impassible river whose water will not allow even a flower to float. There they are met by Sha Wujing, a sea monster who protects the river and eats any who dares to cross. Wu Kong determines that they must defeat the monster if they are to cross the river successfully. At the peak of frustration, Wu Kong decides to ask the Goddess of Mercy for help. She tells Wu Kong that the sea creature has been waiting for them, and will join them on their journey; it turns out that Sha Wujing, like Wu Kong and Bajie, once held an official position in the heavens but was expelled for angering the Jade Emperor.
