#1 The wives were constantly on the phone trying to find out what had happened. The wives would phrase it as if they thought something had happened to their husbands, when in reality, they just wanted to know whose husband it was.

#2 The final news that a wife receives is usually delivered by a man with some authority or moral standing. The protocol is for the husband to bring the news in person, not on the telephone.

#3 The next series of calls increased the likelihood that it was Pete who had died. Only 20 men were left in the squadron, and soon 9 or 10 had been accounted for by the fluttering reports of the death angels. Jane knew that only two men were unaccounted for: her husband, Pete, and a pilot named Bud Jennings.

#4 The smell of burned beyond recognition permeated the air when airplane fuel exploded. It was so intense that everything except the hardest metals burned and gave up the ghost in the form of every stricken putrid gas known to chemistry.
