#1 The parable of the two brothers is about two groups of people: the younger brother, who leaves home to follow Jesus, and the elder brother, who stays home and follows the traditional morality of his family and community.

#2 The parable of the two brothers demonstrates the destructive self-centeredness of the younger brother, but it also condemns the elder brother’s moralistic life in the strongest terms. It demonstrates that both the irreligious and the religious are spiritually lost.

#3 The first child in a family tends to be the parent-pleaser, while the second child tends to be the rebel. The first child grows up, takes a conventional job, and settles down near Mom and Dad, while the second child goes off to live in the hip-shabby neighborhoods of New York and Los Angeles.

#4 The irony of the modern culture wars is that Christianity is typically viewed as a religion and moralism, but in reality, it was not always so. From the beginning, Christianity was viewed as a tertium quid, something else entirely.
