#1 We often forget that our parents are just human beings who were children like us once. They aren’t perfect, and they have a lot of approval seeking and validation going on within them.

#2 My mother, who was born in Poland in 1942, was raised in poverty. She has never felt worthy of many of the good things that she deserves as a human being. But she was a single mom of five girls, so I learned independence, resilience, and inner strength from her.

#3 My father, who was an alcoholic, taught me to love literature, help a friend in need, and have fun in daily rebellion. He taught me how to be sarcastic and how to have fun in daily rebellion.

#4 We are constantly learning from others and adapting to their standards. We must do this in order to survive, but we must also do it to become who we want to be in adulthood.
