#3 I was a watchful child, constantly scanning the adults around me for clues and listening in on their conversations. I was constantly trying to understand my parents and forgive them, but I was constantly being blamed for my parents’ problems.

#4 My father was sick, and my mother took him to the hospital. Tío Vitín and Tío Benny came to get me and my brother, and they were talking about how our home was a pigsty with dishes in the sink and no toilet paper. I felt ashamed, and I cleaned up the dishes every night.
