#1 The Doctor, a French man, was conscripted and sent to help the French with the war effort. However, he was more than just a kindly man willing to sign what he must to protect his fellow Frenchmen. He was a part of the underground resistance.

#2 The trail was followed by the Jewish community itself. They did not begrudge anyone their secrecy, but if there was a way out before the trap snapped shut, they took it.

#3 The Doctor was able to help Valentin get out of France and start a new life in South America. He gave him money to start his new life, and told him that he would need to be vaccinated before going to Bolivia.

#4 The Doctor was a doctor, and he helped the French resistance. He was well compensated for his work, and he had no need for the gratitude of the people he helped.
