#1 The Christian denomination I grew up in, the Southern Baptist Convention, was founded on the idea that slavery could coexist with Christianity. While northern white Christians were against slavery, they rarely showed any support for black equality.

#2 I am the CEO and founder of Public Religion Research Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that conducts research on issues at the intersection of religion, culture, and politics. I have always been fascinated by the ways in which beliefs, institutional belonging, and culture impact opinions and behaviors in public space.

#3 White southerners were victims who were dishonorably treated after fighting a noble war. Theologically, they claimed the superiority of both the white race and Protestant Christianity, which was used to justify a century of religiously sanctioned terrorism.

#4 White Christian churches have not just been complacent, but they have been complicit in the maintenance of white supremacy. The theological core of American Christianity has been thoroughly structured by an interest in protecting white supremacy.
