#1 The town of Plainfield, Wisconsin, is a nondescript and featureless landscape. The population has never exceeded 1,000 people. The Gein family, who lived on a one-hundred-ninety-five-acre spread some miles outside of town, were unusual in that they avoided their fellow Plainfielders at all costs.

#2 The marriage of George and Augusta Gein was not a happy one. Augusta quickly assumed the role of domestic tyrant, laying down the law and berating her husband at every opportunity for his laziness, weakness, and lack of ambition. He, in turn, retreated into himself and into the bottle.
