#1 Faith is the state of being ultimately concerned: the dynamics of faith are the dynamics of man’s ultimate concern. Man, like every living being, is concerned about many things, but man has spiritual concerns that are extremely important and cannot be ignored.

#2 Faith is the state of being ultimately concerned. The content matters immensely for the life of the believer, but it does not matter for the formal definition of faith.

#3 Faith is an act of the total personality. It occurs in the center of personal life and encompasses all its elements. Faith is the most personal of all personal acts, and it involves the participation of the unconscious elements in the personality structure.

#4 Faith is a personal, centered act that transcends both the drives of the non-rational unconscious and the structures of the rational conscious. It is not an act of any of man’s rational functions, but it is an act in which both the rational and non-rational elements of his being are transcended.
